Adventures of a Novelty Fabric and Selvage Obsessed Quilter

Glad you stopped by!

I am a busy wife and the mom of 19 year old twins, a boy and a girl who are Sophomores at Syracuse University.

I have been quilting since the spring of 2008. I love novelty fabrics, colorful and unique.

Selvage quilting is addictive! Who knew the "junk" we cut off and threw out would be what I now save! I started a new tradition when I travel--visiting quilt stores! I particularly enjoy going to stores that have been named in the Quilt Sampler Featured Shop Lists-

Quilt Sampler Fall/Winter 2010!

I picked up a copy at
on Saturday.
They have an ad in this issue of the magazine!
So exciting!

Also exciting is the fact that my blogging friend
works at one of the featured stores,
Tiny Stitches in Marietta, GA,!
It is hard to imagine their excitement level!

I spent time over the weekend perusing my new issue,
as well as some back issues of Quilt Sampler,
which I have never gotten around to reading.
Knowing I got all the back ones on Ebay,
I felt no rush.
Now, I discovered I am still missing one-
the first issue- 1995.
The hunt is ON!!!

Sewed all day...

but no quilting!

I am working on a replacement canvas cover
for a friends outdoor bar that was damaged.

I got about 75% finished,
so I can see the end in sight!

But, good news is that once I finish,
I can start my next project!

Traditions at the White Swan

I was impressed when the shop owner entered the store,
and asked me where in NJ I was from.
It seems if he doesn't recognize you by face,
he takes a quick scan of the parking lot to determine
where you are from, and then inquires how you found the store!

The store was very nice, with a great selection of fabrics!
Of course, friendly staff too!!

Happy Birthday Babe, one day early!

Tomorrow, August 18th, our wonderful
Black Lab, Babe will be 12 years old!
We adopted her from a friend who
couldn't keep her when she was 8 months old.
It was love at first sight!!
She is a wonderful pet, who brightens our days!
She still is very active, and if it wasn't for her gray "beard"
you would never think she was 12.
We love you Babe!
You will see tomorrow why her
birthday is especially important to our family!

Willimantic, CT

A few weekends ago, we went to CT for a
weekend away with my brother in law and sister in law.
Of course, I researched Quilt stores in the area.

Our first stop was in WiIlimantic.
We were greeted by these frogs as we crossed the bridge into town.
Of course, we had to find out the story of the frogs!!

The Frog Bridge, Willimantic

One of the more intentionally unusual structures in Connecticut is The Frog Bridge of Willimantic, also known as the Thread City Crossing. Spanning the Willimantic River, the nearly 500-foot bridge was completed in 2000 at a cost of $13 million and connects routes 66 and 32, and would be fairly unremarkable if not for the four 11-foot frogs sitting atop giant spools of thread.

Why frogs, you ask? (And why wouldn’t you?)

Well, rather than the birthplace of Kermit or an area with a high French population, Willimantic is known as being home of the infamous “Battle of the Frogs” in 1754. To paraphrase the legend: One hot summer night, the good people of Windham (which Willimantic is now part of) were roused from their sleep by “a shrieking, clattering thunderous roar” unlike anything they had ever heard before. Fearing that it was either an Indian attack or Judgement Day, the townsfolk freaked out and began to panic — some ran through the streets brandishing muskets, others fell to their knees in frantic prayer. Some cooler heads finally prevailed and went in search of the ungodly noises, but to no avail. Only the next morning when the sun came up, did they find the source of the horrendous cacaphony — a nearby pond, down to no more than a puddle thanks to the dry summer, was ringed with scores of dead bullfrogs. Apparently, some sort of frog turf war had broken out and the carnage was excessive . . . but not as excessive as the embarrassment the citizens of Windham were to endure over the next few decades.

But as the years passed, the denizens of Windham/Willimantic embraced the frog legend — a frog now appears on the official town seal. So when it came time to build the new bridge, the town leaders decided to get hoppy with it and put the town’s unique stamp on it. Hence, the frogs.

Oh, and the spools? Less interesting history there as the town was home to a thriving mill industry and became known as “Thread City.” (You can learn more about it at the Windham Textile & History Museum, if, uh, string is your thing.) Still, makes for your out-of-ordinary bridge.

Tomorrow, Quilter's Dream!
