Adventures of a Novelty Fabric and Selvage Obsessed Quilter

Glad you stopped by!

I am a busy wife and the mom of 19 year old twins, a boy and a girl who are Sophomores at Syracuse University.

I have been quilting since the spring of 2008. I love novelty fabrics, colorful and unique.

Selvage quilting is addictive! Who knew the "junk" we cut off and threw out would be what I now save! I started a new tradition when I travel--visiting quilt stores! I particularly enjoy going to stores that have been named in the Quilt Sampler Featured Shop Lists-

Unexpected selvages!

I recently sold some Heather Ross
fabrics to J.A. on Ebay.
Today, I received this great bunch of selvages
and a few scraps (miscuts she said)
in the most awesome envelope!
(The fabric in the lower right hand corner is the
same as one from Lauren's bag, just a different coloration)

Envelope made from the comics!
I can't thank her enough!
I wrote to her that she has restored my faith in humanity.
But, she sews and has great taste in fabric,
so I had a good feeling about her all along :)
Thanks, J.A.
You made my day!

I have reach a decision!

I will try spray basting, just not this time.
Instead, I have pinned it very well.
On the advice of Susan at Mouse Creek,
I bought a pair of gardening gloves with grippers
which she says will help me control the fabric better!
I have never machine quilted anything larger
than a wall hanging, so wish me luck!
I truly appreciate all the great advice
that was left for me!

Interesting Selvage Fun!

When I was triming off the selvages
from the fabric for Sophie's Quilt,
I did a double take!

Apparently, Marcus Fabrics did not catch a misprint.
Just rotect the copyrightp at all costs!!

Does this make this selvage a collectors item, I wonder ?

Have you ever noticed a selvage misprint?

To Spray Baste or Not To Spray Baste??

That is the question!
(I saw this brand at Walmart today)

Have you used/ Do you use a spray basting product?
Do you like how it works?
Pros/Cons?
Any specific brand?
What do I need to know about it
that you didn't know the first time you used it?

I appreciate any feedback you can give me :)

Binding for Sophie's Quilt

I worked on smoothing out the bumps
on the pinned "quilt sandwich" today.
I also realized that I didn't have enough
yardage for the binding, so a quick visit to
Mouse Creek Quilt Shop
fixed that!
Hopefully I can start machine quilting tomorrow.

Sophie's Quilt!

My cousin Lisa and her husband Mike
recently had their fourth child,
a girl named Sophie.
I saw this marcus fabrics panel while I was in Lancaster,
and I knew I had to make a quilt for Sophie.
I cut and sewed together strips of the
coordinating fabrics to make the quilt back
and of course, no quilt is complete without a label!
I still have to machine quilt and bind it,
but I am happy with the progress I made today!
I love the combination of chocolate brown and pink!

Found!

2 more Heather Ross Fabrics!
I went back to the store and dug a little deeper today

West Hill is Heather Ross' second collection of
quilting cottons for FreeSpiritFabric.
The fabric is inspired by a place very close to Heather's heart:
a small mountain just outside of Montgomery, Vermont
where Heather and her sister lived as children with
their mother in an old one room school-house during the 1970's.
The schoolhouse had once served a small isolated community
that disappeared in the early twenties, leaving crumbling stone
foundations, wild apple orchards, berry patches, century
old asparagus troughs and thousands of other secret
and wonderful places to explore.
A long, well worn footpath led from the
schoolhouse to a wild and rushing waterfall sitting
squarely under an abandoned covered bridge,
pouring into one of the deepest, clearest,
and coldest swimming holes in northern Vermont.

We hope you enjoy Heather's reminiscences
of a quiet and simple Vermont wonderland
and are certain you'll find countless
uses for these dear whimsical patterns.

The Playroom...

a.k.a. the room o'selvages!
I have had several requests to
show a picture of my playroom
now that my cornices, quilt and chair are finished.
The chair is really on the other side of the
room, but I had to move it for the photograph.
I love how everything came out,
and this room makes me smile everytime I am in it!
Hmmm. pillows for the couch??
Even I think that would be too much :)

A wonderful visit and an unexpected gift

Today, our friends Brenda and Eric
and their daughter Nora came for a visit.
It's been way too long since we have
gotten together, and it was great to see them.
Brenda bought this terrific shoe for me-
I LOVE IT!
I can always count on her to be
on the lookout for cool shoe related
stuff for me!
Another great item added to my shoe collection!
I wished we lived closer to each other!

The Aloha Quilt

I requested the latest book in the series at my local library.
I was notified today that it is available and being held for me.

I'd love to know what you think:

Have you read this series of books?
Do you have a favorite?
Have you/ would you read them out of sequence?
Any thoughts are welcome and appreciated!

My favorite vendor booth!

Graphic Impressions
They had an amazing assortment of
brights and novelties, and it was
tough to buy only what I did!
Eventually, I was able to restrain myself
to 17 fat quarters, and a pattern that
I will use to showcase my
novelties collection of fabrics!

Final stop of the day-

I have this same fabric in black, ivory and white,
so I was happy to find it in another colorstory.
Fabric & Quilt Shack
3137 Old Philadelphia Pike
Bird In Hand, PA 17505

Lasdt stop, and it was crowded,
but not crazy!
Efficient staff, and very nice selection.
By this point, we were seeing alot of things
we had already seen!

Coming tomorrow-
the AQS show
and vendors!!

Store #4-Zooks

Love black background and colorful prints!
Lovely selection!!

Zook's Fabric Store
3535 Old Philadelphia Pike
Intercourse, PA 17534

Z&S Fabrics started as a blending of two brick and mortar stores –
Zook’s Dry Goods in Intercouse, PA,
and Sauder’s Fabrics in Denver, PA.
Originally, the website shared stock with them,
taking fabric for orders directly from the shelves in the shops.
As our website (quickly) grew,
we discovered that our system of
shared stock was not practical, and
Z&S Fabrics had to branch out on our own.

Next stop- Old Country Store

Old Country Store
3510 Old Philadelphia Pike
Intercourse, PA
Imagine, if you will, about 200
people crammed into this space!
This store was packed!
So much so that I left empty handed!
Unbelievable, I know!
Very nice selection, but just too hectic
to do any serious damage!

We walked around the village of Intercourse ,
through some very cute shops.
We stopped at Immergut Soft Pretzels.
Outstanding pretzels!
