Adventures of a Novelty Fabric and Selvage Obsessed Quilter

Glad you stopped by!

I am a busy wife and the mom of 19 year old twins, a boy and a girl who are Sophomores at Syracuse University.

I have been quilting since the spring of 2008. I love novelty fabrics, colorful and unique.

Selvage quilting is addictive! Who knew the "junk" we cut off and threw out would be what I now save! I started a new tradition when I travel--visiting quilt stores! I particularly enjoy going to stores that have been named in the Quilt Sampler Featured Shop Lists-

T shirt quilting class #2

Tonight we started assemly.
Basically what we did was to make squares,
and join them together into rows.
I almost completed my bottom row!!

Some close ups of the assembly:

There is no class next week, so we
have 2 weeks to work on them
before we meet for the next class!

Design wall 99% complete!!

This afternoon, with the help of my son Matt,
I finally began the construction of my design wall!
The first step was putting rubber cement in the groove
of one side of the Foamular, then joining it with the tongue side.
We did this for both seams.
We used clear packing tape to secure the seams, on both sides.
Then, Matt used rubber cement to glue some balsa wood
strips for additional support.
Once they dried, he taped over them as well.

Next, we put the
White and Natural batting on.
We used a staple gun to secure it to the backside.
Finally, we added a layer of white felt,
and secured it to the back of the board.
I need to still pull the flannel tighter in a few spots,
but that wil be an easy fix for another day.
For now, I am going to wait and see
if I need to secure it to the wall or not.
Of course, I had to try it out!!
Here, I am auditioning
fabrics for Marisa's T shirt Quilt.
Other than being somewhat difficult
to maneuver because of the size-
6' by 8'
it was an easy project that I
will use for years to come!

A few more shirts added

I realized I had a few additional shirts
to add to the quilt.
This morning I prepared,
stabilized, and trimmed them.

The next step!

Our homework for next time is
to have all shirts stabilized and trimmed,
and to begin auditioning fabrics!!
Marisa and I raided my stash,
and pulled out alot of great fabrics!!!

Stabilizing!

The next step was to iron on
Pellon SF 101 stabilizer onto the T shirts.
It is amazing the stability!!!

Once the T shirts were all ironed ,
we trimmed the T shirts again
squared them, and to the size we wanted.

Preparing the T shirts

edited in photos on 9/26

We got busy cutting off the neck,
sleeves, and back of the T shirts.

Next, we cut the T shirt pieces
square to roughly the size we
wanted them to be.

If there was any decoration
elsewhere on the shirt,
those pieces were also cut.

T shirt quilt class!

I signed uo to take a class tomake
a T shirt quilt at Mouse Creek Quilt Shop.
The first class was tonight,
and I totally had a great time.
There are 7 women taking the class.
It is being taught by a woman named Robin,
and I can tell I am going to love her style of teaching.
Her philosophy is that there are no rules:
add fabric, make the T shirt part smaller,
whatever works!!!
Pictured above are my daughter's old T shirts
that I will use as a base for the quilt!!

Turkish Delight- Jewel!

by Kaffe Fassett
I spent some time hunting
this beautiful fabric on the internet,
and it arrived today.
It is spectacular in person-
the photo doesn't do it justice.

New pocketbook!

Dooney and Bourke Pop Novelty -
Large Tassel Zip Top

I realized that I never blogged about my
new handbag I bought this summer.
I have used a Coach Swingback
style bag for quite a few years, and decided
it was time I got a "grown up" pocketbook.
While we were in CT,
I got this at the Dooney and Bourke
outlet for a fantastic price!
I love the design, and how colorful it is.
I would love
to find a fabric just like this!

Birthday bling!

Europa Hinge Bangle

I love Brighton jewelry.
We were passing by Brighton at the mall the other day,
when my husband and daughter asked me to go
in and see if anything caught my eye.
I was looking at the necklace from the Europa collection,
and the sales clerk showed me this fabulous bangle.
I looked no further, it was mine!
I just love it!!

Birthday cake!

I always have lunch on the
second day of Rosh Hashanah
for family and friends.
This year, our friends Rachelle and Steve surprised
me with an ice cream birthday cake from
Jersey Freeze, a local institution for ice cream,
that has been featured on Food Network Unwrapped.
It's my favorite!!
A slight improvisation for the candles, but it worked!!

Happy Birthday to me!

Today I celebrated my birthday!
I had a great day, filled with many birthday wishes.
I searched the internet, and discovered that my
birthday has only coincided with Rosh Hashanah 4 times so far.
1972, 1983, 1991, and 2010.

Happy New Year!

Tonight, the holiday of Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown.

In Hebrew, Rosh Hashanah means, literally,
"Head of the Year," and as its name indicates,
it is the beginning of the Jewish year.

It is customary to eat apples dipped in honey,
and other sweet treats, so that you will have a sweet year!

To all those who celebrate, I wish you a Shana Tova,
a good year filled with health and happiness!

Why I wanted a 15 year old magazine!

Call it the collector in me,
once I had a few,
I had to have EVERY issue of
Quilt Sampler.
I love reading about the featured stores,
and seeing the changes that have come about in quilting.
One thing I noticed was that
internet shopping for fabrics was not
an option at all for the early years!
Hard to imagine!!!
I hope to put together a master list of the stores
so I can visit as many as possible.
Someday...........
